The Plan

It looks like the Revue Cinema will soon have a new owner who wants to give the movie theatre back to the community. He plans to buy the Roncesvalles Ave. landmark and lease it to the Revue Film Society.

The film society wants to create a dynamic self-sustaining venue that will attract both local residents and the broader film-going public. We intend to develop varied and interesting programming; special series for specific interest groups; innovative sponsorship opportunities; and initiatives with educational and charitable aims.

Trying to revive an independent theatre might seem foolhardy in the current environment. Few of these local moviehouses have survived in the tough theatre business, where they must compete against the big multiplexes on one hand and entice viewers away from their television sets and DVDs on the other.

But Roncesvalles Village is a unique community, and Toronto is a film-loving city. We believe with lots of support behind the scenes and at the ticket booth, we can succeed.
