The Revue Film Society
Last year, the announcement that the Revue Cinema on Roncesvalles Ave. was closing stunned and saddened west-end residents and Toronto cinephiles. But the community rallied.
Sunnyside Ave. residents Susan Flanagan and Mark Ellwood took the initiative. They organized a public meeting, and soon a small army of talented, resourceful people was working to save the Revue. Many of the troops are local residents; others are loyal Revue fans from other parts of the city.
The non-profit Revue Film Society was incorporated as the vehicle to raise funds, make plans and eventually, it was hoped, lease the theatre. Volunteers worked on a new vision for a reopened theatre; others devised business, marketing and media plans. Meanwhile, a well-organized grass-roots door-to-door campaign to solicit funds and boost support was launched. In short order, the society raised more than $30,000 through canvassing and contributions from well-wishers through this website and by mail.
Now it looks like the opportunity to lease the cinema is at hand. That means we'll need even more help and tens of thousands of dollars in working capital.
The Save the Revue battle has just begun.
If you can help in fund-raising, with the website, marketing and media, or if you are willing to wield a broom or paintbrush once we have access to the theatre, please contact us at
